How do we study the Bible?
Let me start by saying that the Bible is no ordinary book. The words in its pages are like a medicine to your soul, and it has the power to change your life forever.
Hebrews 4:12 tells us “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
And John 8: 31 -32 says “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
So what are these two verses telling us, well they are saying, if we don’t study God’s word and apply his truth in our lives we will lack the power we need to mature in Christ and to glorify God in his word.
So it does not matter where you are in your walk with God at the moment, I want to encourage you to start spending time with him in his word each day.
Proverbs 4:20-22 says, My son, be attentive to my words…for they are life to those who find them… The word “attend” means to pay attention to, give some time to something. To attend to the Word of God is a lot more than just reading; it’s meditating on it.
So we need to spend time with God, and as the Proverbs reading just told us, his words have life.
So here are some steps to help you to spend time with God studying his word each day.
Start by setting some time aside each day, I personally find I have time in the morning, but if that does not work for you find time that does, my wife likes time before going to bed, so it will be different for everyone, and you will have to find a time that suites you, once you have found the time stick to it each day and you will start to see the fruit this time brings to your life.
Next find a place that you enjoy being in, a room where you can be alone or somewhere you feel comfortable and like to be.
As well as a Bible you may want to have a Bible dictionary, concordance, and a pen and paper so you don’t have to stop every few minutes to reference something
Most importantly prepare your heart, talk to God about things you may need to confess, and enter your study time peacefully and without anything that may block you from receiving his word during your study.
Once you have finished pray again and thank God for what he may have revealed to you.
So then let me ask you to make it a priority to study God’s word because there is power in it to change your life and help you become the person God wants you to be and that’s the best possible life you can ever have!
